Accessibility statement
AIDRE exists so that every student can use their course materials on equal terms, whatever their disability and whatever device or assistive technology they use. Inclusion is the whole point of the project, not a box to tick, and we hold ourselves to it here too.
A website about accessibility should pass its own audit. This site is designed to meet WCAG 2.1 Level AA, and it is checked against that standard every time it is built.
How the site is built
- Every page uses real headings, landmarks and lists, with a link at the top to skip straight to the content.
- Everything can be reached and used with a keyboard, and the element in focus is always clearly outlined.
- Text, links and the focus outline meet WCAG contrast ratios in both the light and dark themes. The site follows your device's light or dark setting.
- Pages reflow to a 320-pixel-wide screen without sideways scrolling, and text can be enlarged in the browser.
- The site uses no JavaScript, so nothing on a page changes unexpectedly or depends on a script loading.
How it is tested
Every page is checked automatically before it is published. The checks cover page titles, language, a single main heading and an unbroken heading order, text alternatives for images, contrast in both themes, and unique identifiers. A browser test then presses Tab through every page in both themes, confirming each stop is visible and in order and that focus is never trapped, and confirms no page scrolls sideways at 320 pixels.
